At Tropical Ice our origins are strongly tied to the North and Central Queensland community and greater surrounding regions.
As a family owned and operated business, we have established a trusting and professional relationship with our clients. As such, the Tropical Ice name has become synonymous with quality service.
Following the completion of the Burdekin Falls Dam in 1986, the ice plant that was used during the construction process was relocated to Townsville. At this time, Townsville Ice Works was born and began supplying ice to a number of businesses, particularly in the fishing industry. In 1990 Mark and Mary Menkens purchased the business and acquired Tropical Ice, which was then based in Plume Street, South Townsville. Our family then merged the two businesses together under the name Tropical Ice. The next major acquisition was Chunk Ice in Mackay in 2006. We continue to expand our services to customers from Townsville, Mackay, Ingham, Ayr, Charters Towers and the coal fields.
Under our family’s supervision, including that of Mark, Mary, Ben and Dom Menkens in Townsville and Glen and Jessica Saro in Mackay, our production has increased from 20 tonnes of ice per week to 110 tonnes per day. Tropical Ice is one of the largest producers of high quality, food-grade ice in Australia. Through our partnerships with other businesses and community groups we have played a strong role in Queensland’s history and growth.
Tropical Ice continues to serve clients in the food, industrial, retail and mining industries. At Tropical Ice we are proud to say that the ice we produce and distribute is of the highest quality standards and meets all Australian health regulations.
